What Is the Stem Stitch?

The stem stitch brings a fun, twisted texture to any design with its rope-like look. Made up of small, overlapping stitches, it flows smoothly in curved or straight lines, making it perfect for outlining, adding plant stems, and adding interest to borders. It’s so similar to the outline stitch. Jump over here to learn about the outline stitch vs stem stitch and learn how to stem stitch below!

Stem Stitch Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric at the point where you want to start your stitch.
  2. Make a small, straight stitch—but don’t pull it through all the way just yet. Pull it so that there is still a bit of slack.
  3. Hold the slack thread on the right side of your stitch line. Going left to right? Hold it below the stitch line.
  4. For the next stitch, bring the needle up right in the middle of the last stitch line so the stitches will overlap.
  5. Pull your thread through so the previous stitch lays flat.
  6. Keep working along your line or curve, letting each stitch add to that twisted, ropey look.
  7. Aim for even spacing and consistent stitch size to keep things neat.
  8. Once you’re done, secure the thread on the back of the fabric—and voilà!

Embroidery Projects with the Stem Stitch

1. Monogrammed Sweatshirt

Create a monogrammed sweatshirt using the stem stitch.

  • Materials: Sweatshirt; embroidery thread; needle; hoop.
  • Instructions:
    1. Choose your letter and your preferred font type. Tip: Cursive text works great with the outline stitch.
    2. Plan your design and use a fabric marking pen to outline your text on the chosen item.
    3. Use the stem stitch to bring your design to life.

2. Decorative Borders

Give your embroidery projects an elegant edge with stem-stitched borders.

  • Materials: Fabric, embroidery thread, hoop, needle.
  • Instructions:
    1. Mark the border outline with a fabric pen.
    2. Use the stem stitch along the line for a stylish, twisted border that adds depth and detail.

Tips & Tricks for Perfecting the Stem Stitch

1. Keep Your Stitch Length Consistent

  • Tip: Space your stitches evenly for that polished, put-together look!

2. Check Your Tension

  • Tip: Stay mindful of your thread tension to avoid puckering and keep your lines smooth and steady.

3. Overlap for Your Look

  • Tip: Play with overlap! More overlap gives a fuller look, while less overlap keeps your lines light and thin.

4. Experiment with Thread Thickness

  • Tip: Thicker threads create a bold outline, while thinner ones bring a delicate finish—experiment to find the vibe that fits your project best.
